So apparently I'm Mr. Roman now, and I'm in charge of helping young minds grow and expand like some tumescent...thing. This week I've taught a good bit of Poe (The Raven/Berenice) to mixed results (only two fell asleep on me!) and tomorrow I'm going to work on teaching "the elements of setting in short fiction." Earlier in the week (was it Tuesday? Wednesday? I've lost track) I had them do an Exquisite Corpse exercise in order to get some works of flash fiction (4-600 words), which, for people never forced to be creative before, is a necessary step on their way to the "real" short story that they're going to be writing for their portfolios.
So far they seem to be a great group of kids (Juniors, I think. Some seniors, maybe?) and they've amazed me with the reception I've received. It worries my cynical mind to think that this may be as good as it gets. They're attentive (for kids), respectful (for kids), and I think they may just need the right kind of environment to be able to learn how to best express themselves in some non-formulaic way (as opposed to what most of us had to go through in High School, I'm sure.)
So it's be nice, but tiring. After putting in a day's worth of teaching (4 periods of general [6 if you count the scant help I give the self-sufficient AP kids]) I'm marching into the Redi Mart and clerking until close (11 [I get home around 12 generally]) and I'm back up around 6:30/7 to get ready and get to Central to start it all over again.
I haven't been able to get any work done at all for Morehead, but I'm hoping that since I don't have to close this Friday (today now, look at that) I may be able to work something out before I go up with Allison on Saturday. Also, it seems they've given me the weeked (Sat/Sun) off, but I may be picking up some hours Sunday for another co-worker who is working 80 hour weeks between two jobs because "Well, I just get -so- bored". (Pisses me off too...)
Hopefully this is all going to go well.
